It is with a certain sense of disbelief that we announce, after almost 45 years of service, that Paul has decided to move on from clerking and retire as Senior Clerk here at New Court Chambers.
As a young man, Paul was engaged as Senior Clerk of the Chambers of Ms Christian Bevington, then at Cloisters in November 1981. With modest numbers, 6 barristers to start, Paul has committed himself to this set for just about his entire career and has worked with successive Heads of Chambers to expand, develop and promote chambers.
Chambers eventually, having expanded into various annexes, soon outgrew Cloisters and took the decision to be all under ‘one roof’ and Paul oversaw the successful move to New Court in 1997.
He was instrumental in identifying and nurturing us from a general common law set into specialist family chambers following our move to New Court as he identified where our strengths and expertise had developed.
Over his years in chambers, Paul has encouraged and nurtured generations of barristers and clerks and has built strong and enduring professional relationships, as well as friendships, with members past and present, many fellow clerks and clients alike.
Following Chris Poole KC and Giles Bain taking over as Heads of Chambers in 2015, Paul has supported them both with their commitment to expanding both the size and reputation of New Court as a specialist Family Chambers.
After so many years of service, Paul has decided that now is the time to relax and step back from his demanding role as our Senior Clerk. He leaves chambers in a very much stronger place than when he arrived back in 1981.
All here at New Court wish Paul and his family the very best for a long and enjoyable retirement.
Paul will forever be a friend of chambers, and we look forward to welcoming him back for events, after his departure in late September 2026.
